Queen Elizabeth II Grandstand - Royal Randwick Racecourse

Australian Turf Club

The Queen Elizabeth II Grandstand at Royal Randwick Racecourse recently underwent significant remedial works, replacing all combustible cladding with new, safer cladding supplied by Simplex Co. Commissioned by Simplex, my task was to highlight both the superior quality of their product and the craftsmanship of their installers in revitalising this iconic structure.

The photography had to portray the scale of this ambitious project and showcase the aesthetic appeal of the new cladding once installed. Utilising specialist photo equipment and a deep understanding of how the material and colour reacted under direct sunlight, I was able to capture the cladding's elegance and durability. With limited ability to control the vast environment, understanding and leveraging the natural lighting conditions was crucial.

Opened to the public in 2013, the grandstand stretches 110 metres in length and stands six storeys high. Designed by Fitzpatrick + Partners with an interior fit-out by Woods & Bagot, and constructed by Brookfield Multiplex, this project represents a collaborative effort of excellence. The resulting images not only celebrate the grandstand's architectural grandeur but also the meticulous attention to safety and detail brought by Simplex Co.
